Andrea Mantegna‘s painting is a powerful study in realism and perspective, heightening the tragedy of the scene through dramatic foreshortening. The anatomical details, particularly Christ’s thorax, are meticulously rendered, while the wounds on his hands and feet, along with the mourners’ faces, are depicted without idealization. The sharply defined drapery adds to the emotional intensity. Notably, the composition emphasizes Christ’s genitals, a common motif in Renaissance depictions of Jesus, linked to theological reflections on his humanity. Though strikingly realistic, Mantegna subtly reduced the size of Christ’s feet to avoid obscuring the body, demonstrating both technical mastery and artistic intent.
