Andrea Mantegna‘s painting is a powerful study in realism and perspective, heightening the tragedy of the scene through dramatic foreshortening. The anatomical details, particularly Christ’s thorax, are meticulously rendered, while the wounds on his hands and feet, along with the mourners’ faces, are depicted without idealization. The sharply defined drapery adds to the emotional intensity.
