Category: Women artists
Regardless of the progress women have made in the sphere of art, they have often been marginalized throughout different eras of history. Their skills and talent were considered secondary priorities. Most cultures believed that women cannot intellectually or physically dedicate themselves to the very demanding world of art, especially painting, sculpture, or even architecture.
Women were often barred from attending the renown art schools and workshops that would have enabled them to learn new and useful skills and establish professional contacts. Many women Artists had no option but to work in domestic spaces or become well-known artists aides. As and when women managed to build careers they were often disregarded and their work was ignored or credited to men within the field.
The borders were further tighten by societal expectations where women focused on house chores, getting married, and childbearing resulting into them having no time or energy if at all they wanted to dedicate themselves to the craft. But, in spite of these systemic barriers, a number of women artists were able to succed. Here we try to honour them.
