This Italian Lombard painting, dated around 1554, is a work by Sofonisba Anguissola (1531/35, Cremona – 1625, Palermo). Created on poplar wood, the artwork bears an inscription and date in the book depicted within the painting: Sophonisba Angussola Virgo seipsam fecit 1554. Part of the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien’s Gemäldegalerie collection, the painting’s provenance suggests it may have belonged to Emperor Rudolf II in 1604 before being recorded in the treasury in 1747/48. This self-portrait of Sofonisba Anguissola reflects her artistic identity and dedication to an honest representation of nature. The artwork is accessible through the museum’s online collection at https://www.khm.at/en/objectdb/detail/66/.
