    Pinacoteca di Brera

Pietà, Sofonisba Anguissola

The Pinacoteca acquired the painting in 1909, initially attributing it to Bernardino Campi. However, it is actually a smaller replica of an original work by the artist, created by one of his students. Dating to Sofonisba’s stay in Madrid (after 1574), this version has a more intimate and less dramatic atmosphere than the original, suggesting it was intended for private devotion.
